William Penn, an English Quaker and founder of the Province of Pennsylvania, was a champion of religious freedom and tolerance. His vision for a colony based on democratic principles and peaceful coexistence with Native Americans laid the groundwork for the ideals of liberty and equality that would later shape the United States.
