Samuel Wilson was an American public servant born in 1766. He is known as the inspiration for the iconic figure of Uncle Sam, a personification of the United States government. Wilson worked as a meat packer during the War of 1812 and supplied meat to the U.S. Army. The barrels he used were marked with the initials "U.S.," which some soldiers jokingly interpreted as standing for "Uncle Sam." This association between Wilson and the patriotic figure of Uncle Sam has made him a part of American folklore and popular culture.
