Jay McShann was an American jazz pianist, bandleader, and composer who played a significant role in the development of the Kansas City jazz scene in the 1930s and 1940s. Known as "Hootie," McShann's band helped launch the career of legendary saxophonist Charlie Parker. McShann's music, characterized by its bluesy, swinging style, made him a key figure in the transition from big band jazz to bebop.
