Daryl Gates was an American police officer and the Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) from 1978 to 1992. His tenure saw both advancements and controversies in policing, including the 1992 Los Angeles riots, which were partly attributed to tensions with the LAPD. Gates' legacy includes his efforts in modernizing police practices as well as the contentious aspects of his leadership.
