Athenagoras I was the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople from 1948 to 1972. He played a significant role in modernizing the Eastern Orthodox Church and fostering dialogue with other Christian denominations. Athenagoras' leadership and efforts to promote ecumenism helped shape the church's contemporary approach to interfaith relations.
