Wilhelm Steinitz was a German-American chess player born on May 17, 1836. He is often considered the first official World Chess Champion, having held the title from 1886 to 1894. Steinitz was known for his strategic approach to the game and his contributions to chess theory. He played a significant role in popularizing chess in the United States and is remembered as one of the greatest chess players in history. He passed away on August 12, 1900.
