CHAPTER

VERSE

17

अविनाशि तु तद्विद्धि येन सर्वमिदं ततम् |
विनाशमव्ययस्यास्य न कश्चित्कर्तुमर्हति || 2.17 ||

Avināśi tu tadviddhi yena sarvamidaṁ tatam
Vināśamavyayasyāsya na kaścitkartum arhati ||

Know that which pervades the entire body is indestructible. No one is able to destroy the imperishable soul.

Lesson:

This verse emphasizes the eternal nature of the soul. It teaches that the essence of every living being, the soul, is indestructible. Just as a person changes clothes, the soul changes bodies in its journey through life. The body, which is made of physical matter, is subject to destruction, but the soul, being spiritual in nature, is beyond destruction.

The verse suggests that one should understand and realize the indestructible nature of the soul, which exists beyond the physical body. It's like realizing that the space inside a jar remains unchanged even when the jar itself is broken. Similarly, the soul remains untouched by the changes and destruction of the material body.

Understanding this concept can bring great comfort and perspective, especially in times of difficulty or loss. It reminds us that while our physical bodies are mortal and subject to decay, our true essence, the soul, is eternal and everlasting. This understanding can provide solace and inspire us to focus on spiritual growth and enlightenment, knowing that the soul transcends the temporary experiences of the material world.
